Interactive Notebook Templates for Unit Fractions

This template has been created by a teacher to help students better understand the concept of unit fractions. By using this template, students will be able to create an engaging visual representation of each of the unit fractions in their maths workbooks that can be used again and again during a maths unit on unit fractions.

The following unit fractions each have a mini unit fraction flipbook:

  • ½ (halves)
  • ⅓ (thirds)
  • ¼ (quarters)
  • ⅕ (fifths)
  • ⅙ (sixths)
  • ⅛ (eighths)

This template is a great alternative to a worksheet that students have to fill out and stick in their maths books, rather creates an element of interaction and engagement with the flipping of the mini books within their own maths book!

How to Use This Engaging Set of Unit Fraction Templates

Depending on where you are at with your maths unit, you may like to print off these templates and use throughout the unit as students learn each of the different representations of each of the above unit fractions. Students are asked to write the word that represents each unit fraction and shade in three different shapes to visually represent each of the unit fractions.

Student directions:

  1. Cut out both rectangles, then on the dotted lines of the ‘flips’.
  2. Write the fraction word form on the ‘flap’ and shade the models on the ‘flips’ to match.
  3. Place the ‘flips’ one on top of the other and glue to your notebook/paper.
  4. Glue the top portion of the ‘flap’ on top.
