Let’s get Sorting! Unit Fractions in Shapes

Are you looking for a fun way for your students to practice identifying unit fractions? This unit fraction sorting activity includes the following images of unit fractions:

  • One-half
  • One-third
  • One-fourth
  • One-sixth
  • One-eighth
  • One-twelfth

Pair your students and allow them to take turns sorting the images of each of the above unit fractions. You can differentiate this activity to suit the levels of your students by adding or taking away certain fractions. For example, you might just start with them sorting one-half and one-third, and then add more cards as students become more confident in their knowledge of unit fractions.

Different Unit Fraction Activity Ideas

Apart from a simple sorting activity, these cards are so versatile they can be used for a number of other activities in the classroom when learning about unit fractions. Here are just a few:

  • Fraction Memory: Use the cards to play a memory game where children turn over two cards at a time, trying to find matching pairs of fraction cards and their visual representations.
  • Fraction War: Divide the cards evenly between two players and have them each turn over a card. The player with the larger fraction keeps both cards. The player with the most cards at the end wins.
  • Fraction Order: Challenge children to arrange the cards in order from smallest to largest fraction, or vice versa.
