Play Volume Math Games to Engage Your Students

Have your students mastered how to find the volume of rectangular prisms and are ready for the next challenge? Our volume of a compound shape activity is just one of our volume math games that will take your students to the next level. In this engaging activity, students will match images of compound figures with their equations and volumes. More than just simple multiplication is needed – students will need to think critically to deduce side lengths and find different ways to calculate the volumes of the figures they see.

Included in this resource:

  • 12 compound figures cards
  • 12 equation cards
  • 12 volume cards
  • Recording sheet
  • Answer key

Using Our Volume of a Compound Shape Activity

Our volume math games shine as guided group or maths stations activities, and this one is no different! Here is how to prepare this resource:

Instructions:

  1. Download the resource in the format and colour option of your choice.
  2. Cut apart all the cards. (Printing on cardstock and lamination is recommended for longevity!)
  3. Provide each student with a copy of the recording sheet.
  4. Read the provided instructions or provide them in your maths station.

This and other volume math games can be used as a whole-group activity as well! Simply place a set of three matching cards at various stations around the room, with the figure card face up and the others face down. Students can travel from station to station in pairs or small groups. At each station, they will calculate the volume of the shape and record all possible equation combinations that could lead to their answer. Then, they flip all the cards over to check their work.
