What is the Author’s Purpose? Escape Room Activity

Bring the excitement of an escape room to your classroom with the What is the Author’s Purpose? Escape Room Activity! This interactive and engaging activity challenges students to decode clues and solve puzzles while learning to determine the author’s purpose in various texts. They’ll discover whether the author’s goal is to persuade, inform, or entertain, all while working collaboratively to “escape” the room!

Engaging Author’s Purpose Practice

Students will read a variety of short passages, look at book covers, explore different scenarios and discuss their findings. They’ll use their critical thinking skills to uncover the author’s intent. They will see how context, word choice, and structure all work together to convey the author’s message, building their comprehension and analytical skills.

In the escape room you’ll need to:

  1. Introduce the activity to students by reading the scenario to the class.
  2. Give each student or group their guidebook.
  3. Students work through challenges using the interactive slides to solve the problems.
  4. Once students have all five answers for the code, verify their code with the answer key.

This activity is perfect for reinforcing important reading comprehension skills while making learning fun and hands-on. Students will get a deeper understanding of how and why authors write, developing a stronger foundation in literary analysis and critical thinking.
