Explore the Heading Text Feature with Task Cards
Headings are a key feature of informative texts. They make information more organised, support skimming and scanning and improve understanding.
This set of 24 task cards is the perfect resource for helping students master the heading text feature – a key skill in informative writing. Each task card contains a short informative paragraph on an engaging topic. Students will:
- Choose a card and carefully read the paragraph.
- Identify the main idea of the paragraph.
- Write a heading in the form of a question on the included recording sheet.
Here’s an example paragraph from the resource:
Antarctica is very dry because it is so cold that very little water evaporates into the air to form clouds and rain. Even though it’s covered in ice, it’s actually a desert because it hardly ever rains or snows. The ice there has built up over millions of years from small amounts of snowfall.
For this paragraph, students might come up with the heading: “Why is Antarctica so dry?”
