Aboriginal Egg Basket Template fun this Easter
Use this beautifully illustrated Easter basket template to bring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture and history to your classroom this Easter.
The Aboriginal designs on this Easter resource are a great way to help embed First Nations’ perspectives into your Easter lessons.
An Easter Basket Craft Activity with an Australian Twist
Traditional Indigenous-made baskets were decorated with red, white and brown ochre. Today, grass fibres are boiled with roots, berries and leaves to make Aboriginal baskets with vibrant colours.
Colour the basket, then cut along the outside lines and fold along the dashed lines. To construct, put glue on the shaded sections and join up the sides. Attach the handle with glue or staples, and for a finishing touch (and to take care of those Easter eggs!) place some soft straw/grass or cotton in the basket.
This Easter craft activity can be used in several ways:
🖌️ When studying Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander designs
🧠 A mindful colouring activity
🤪 Fast Finisher or Brain Break
🐰 During lessons on Easter
The illustrations featured in this activity are those of Dunghutti artist, Cynthia O’Brien-Younie.
✂️ Give Them the (Safety) Scissors
This template makes for a bonus cutting skills activity, depending on your students’ ages and abilities.
With adult supervision, cutting skills help students work multiple muscle groups and their brains, plus:
- strengthen finger and hand muscles
- build dexterity and fine motor skills
- improve hand-eye coordination
- develop focus and attention.
And all of these skills are necessary to use a pencil and a fork; button a shirt and tie shoes; write, type and swipe.
Scissor skills are brain and muscle skills!
