Word Chains to Explore Phoneme Manipulation
This word chain activity has been created by an experienced teacher and has been designed to assist students in their phonemic awareness journey. Word chaining is a great phonics activity that will help your students develop their phonemic awareness by getting them to make small changes to words in a sequence. In this printable word chaining activity, students will work in pairs to match the picture cards to the word cards in a line connecting the words with links, for example,
- tag → rag → wag → bag
Word Chaining Activities for Phonemic Awareness
In the sequence above, only the first phoneme is changing. This is a great starting point and you can build up to getting your students to change the middle or end sounds of words. Word chaining activities like this one help students to::
- Recognise how sounds connect to letters.
- Improve their decoding (reading) and encoding (spelling) skills.
- Build confidence in manipulating sounds within words, an essential skill for early literacy.
It’s a highly effective strategy for reinforcing phonemic awareness and promoting a stronger understanding of the relationship between sounds and letters.
