Year 7 Maths Practise

Translating words into math equations is a skill that students work on from an early age. Students first learn basic maths keywords, such as plus, minus, in all, difference, etc. When students begin to work with letters that represent numbers, they again practise this skill. Students learn to write equations to match word sentences such as:

  • 9.9 multiplied by a number is 89.1
  • A number subtracted from 55.5 is 23.15
  • The total of 4.2 and a number is 18.7

Teach Starter has created an interactive self-checking activity to help your students improve their understanding of representing word sentences with a one-variable equation. Students will work their way through 20 questions using whole numbers, decimals and fractions.

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

A team of dedicated, experienced educators created this resource to support your maths lessons.

In addition to individual student work time, use this activity to enhance learning through guided maths groups, whole class lessons or remote learning assignments.

If you have a mixture of above and below-level learners, we have a few suggestions for keeping students on track with these concepts:

🆘 Support Struggling Students

For students needing additional support, provide them with a chart with some examples of key words to look for in number sentences to identify operations.

Easily Prepare This Resource for Your Students

Use the dropdown icon on the Download button to choose between this resource’s interactive PowerPoint or Google Slides version.

Please be sure to open in Presentation mode. Students will read the word sentence and click the matching equation in the grid. If students are correct, the slides will advance and a piece of the picture will appear. If the student is incorrect, they will go back and try again.
