Explore materials that can twist with your students using this science demonstration video perfect for your early years Chemical Sciences unit!
Explore Materials That Can Be Twisted
Do you ever find yourself avoiding science demonstrations in your classroom because of the extensive materials and preparation involved? We hear you!
Teach Starter has made it easy to include science demonstrations in your repertoire of science activities with our series of videos centred on the properties of materials. Simply sign in to your Teach Starter account, project the video page and hit play! No need to worry about extra stress or planning involved in preparing a science demonstration yourself!
In this two-minute properties of materials video, your students will observe whether certain objects can be twisted. Some of the objects featured in the video include licorice, rope, wool and pipe cleaners.
As they watch the video, various multiple-choice questions will be presented on the screen for the students to answer. These include:
- What do you call the twist you can see on the screen?
- Which of the materials listed can you twist to make a rope?
- Which of the materials on the screen has a twist within a twist?
- Which of the objects listed is twisted from two strands?
- What is wool made from?
We recommend that you pause the video after each question appears and discuss the possible answers as a class. You might even have the students talk in pairs or a small group before sharing their answers (and the scientific reasoning behind them!) with the rest of the class.
By the end of the lesson, your class should be able to identify some everyday objects and materials that can twist.
Activities to Accompany This Twisty Objects Science Video
Are you looking for more ways to engage your students with bendy objects? Here are some follow-up activity suggestions from our teacher team:
- Twisty or Not Sorting Activity – Provide a variety of objects and materials to the students and have them sort them into two categories: twistable and non-twistable. Encourage them to discuss their reasoning for placing each item in its category.
- Twisty Material Art Project – Allow students to get creative with twistable materials and fibres by incorporating them into an art project. They can create collages or mixed media pieces using materials like pipe cleaners, wool and other materials.
- Twisty Object Show and Tell – Encourage students to bring in their own twisty objects from home to share with the class. They can describe the object and demonstrate how it can be twisted.
