Explore texture in art with your students using this texture art project perfect for younger primary school students.
What Is Texture in Art?
Texture is one of the seven fundamental elements of art. It refers to the way a surface feels (or looks like it might feel) if touched. Texture provides a visual and tactile quality to artworks. Artists use texture to add depth, interest and realism to their work, creating interesting visual effects with brushstrokes, materials and other physical elements.
In this 7-minute texture art project video written and produced by our teacher team, Holly introduces the concept of texture using common materials students might use to create an interesting and unique creature. She uses words such as smooth, bumpy, hard, soft and rough to describe materials such as feathers, wool, aluminium foil and shiny paper.
After this introduction to the concept of texture, students are then guided through the entire process of creating their very own, textured, crazy creature!
