Teach kids how to sign everyday greetings in Auslan (Australian Sign Language) with a fun video for the primary classroom.
Add Auslan Greetings to Your Classroom Routines
In this edition of the Teach Starter Learn Auslan series, students learn a few of the most common daily greetings used by Australian Sign Language users.
Play the two-minute video for your primary class, and provide plenty of practise. We recommend adding these greetings to your daily classroom routines to help make them stick! After all, the best way to learn any language is to use it daily. Make sure that you get into the habit of signing greetings to your students. They should then be able to sign them back!
Please note that our video host, Auslan translator for Deaf Services Tegan Blanch, uses Northern dialect for ‘Good morning’ and ‘See you later‘ in this video.
Why Use Auslan Greetings in the Classroom?
Using simple sign language greetings in the primary school classroom not only enhances communication and social skills but also promotes inclusivity, diversity and a positive learning environment for all students. Here’s how:
- Inclusive Environment – Incorporating sign language greetings fosters inclusivity by providing a means of communication that accommodates diverse learning needs, including those of students who may be deaf or hard of hearing.
- Promotion of Diversity – Incorporating sign language greetings into the classroom promotes awareness and appreciation of diverse cultures and abilities. This, in turn, creates a classroom environment where all students feel valued and respected for who they are.
- Teacher-Student Bonding – Morning greetings can strengthen the bond between teachers and students by fostering positive communication and rapport. Using Auslan greetings as part of this daily routine is an effective and easy way to incorporate Australian Sign Language in the classroom.
