How to Use Jokes in the Classroom
We know you don’t exactly need a guide to crack a few jokes in the classroom, and you’re well aware that sharing something silly is a simple but effective means of establishing that important rapport with your students. But there are a few tips we thought were worth sharing — just in case you haven’t thought of them!
- Write the question section of a joke on your whiteboard, and have students fill in what they think the punchline will be as a bell-ringer activity. You can go around the room and allow a few students to share their silly answers as part of a morning meeting before revealing the funny!
- Use joke time for brain breaks. Read out jokes during a break period, but challenge your students not to laugh! They’ll soon be in stitches, and it their little minds will get that important rest period to recharge and refresh.
- Turn joke time into a writing prompt. Share the entire joke, and challenge your students to come up with their own punchlines or write a story based on the setup of the joke.
- Build vocabulary with a laugh. Use jokes to introduce new vocabulary words and idioms in a fun and engaging way. For example, a joke that plays on the double meanings of a word can help students better understand the word’s nuances.
