A coronation is a special ceremony where someone becomes a king or queen. It's like a really big party where the new ruler gets a special crown and lots of people come to watch and celebrate!
Who Is King Charles?
The whole world will be watching when King Charles is coronated. But just who is he, and why does he matter so much to the United Kingdom?
King Charles Philip Arthur George Mountbatten-Windsor is the king of the United Kingdom and 14 other Commonwealth realms. He ascended to the throne in late 2022 after the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, who served as queen for more than 70 years.
The king is part of a long line of British monarchs, and he is married to Queen Camilla.
What Is a Monarchy? A Kid-Friendly Definition
When teaching your students about King Charles, it would be helpful to have a kid-friendly definition of monarchy at hand. Here's one from our teacher team!
Monarchy is a type of government where a king or queen is in charge. They usually get their position because they were born into a royal family, like King Charles.
When Is King Charles' Coronation Date?
Although he officially became king upon the death of his mum in 2022, the traditional ceremony of coronation has yet to happen. This is a symbolic and ceremonial event where the new monarch is officially crowned and given all the powers of the monarchy.
King Charles' official coronation will be held 6 May, 2023. The Saturday ceremony will include a physical crown being placed on his head, as well as the official coronation of Queen Camilla.
