Who Is Samichlaus? Why, He’s The Swiss Santa, of Course!
Samichlaus is a figure associated with Christmas traditions in Switzerland, particularly in the German-speaking regions. Samichlaus is a Swiss version of Santa Claus, but there are some distinct differences in the character and the way he is celebrated.
In Swiss folklore, Samichlaus is often depicted as a kindly figure dressed in a bishop’s robe and carrying a staff. He is accompanied by his helper, Schmutzli, who is responsible for bringing a bag of treats. Unlike the more widely known Santa Claus, Samichlaus is said to visit homes on the night of 5 December, the day before St. Nicholas’ Day, to reward well-behaved children with sweets, nuts and fruits.

This printable craft set includes easy-to-follow instructions and templates for creating a charming Samichlaus face on a paper plate. Pupils will enjoy colouring, cutting and assembling their own Samichlaus, complete with his traditional white beard, hat and festive colours.
