A fun activity to practise making equal groups to represent multiplication.
Use this teaching resource in the classroom when teaching early multiplication skills.
Students work with a partner. Each pair of students will require:
- a set of ‘groups of’ cards
- 2 record sheets (1 for each player)
- counters (or other concrete materials)
The pile of cards are placed face-down in the middle of the playing space. Player 1 flips the top card on the pile. They use the concrete materials to make the groups indicated on the card. Next, they record information about these groups on their record sheet – drawing the groups they have made, labelling them and calculating the product. Player 2 checks that this has been done correctly, then flips the next card on the pile and proceeds with their turn. The activity continues in this way with students taking turns at making groups and recording the information on their sheet.
