Counting rhymes are a fantastic resource for nurturing early number sense in young children. These rhymes make learning numbers fun and memorable, aiding kids in understanding counting sequences, recognising number patterns and establishing a solid base for future maths skills.

This resource features the counting nursery rhyme “Hickory Dickory Dock”. The download features one portrait page containing the entire rhyme, along with four landscape pages that feature one verse of the rhyme at a time. It displays the complete rhyme in a child-friendly font, making it accessible for early readers to follow along. It also uses underlining to denote the rhyming pairs, e.g. dock/clock, two/blue.

Use “Hickory Dickory Dock” in Your Lessons

This poster can be used in many different ways to complement learning in your early years classroom. Here are a few suggestions from our teacher team that you might like to try:

  • Telling the Time – Use a toy clock or a classroom clock to practise counting as the mouse runs up the clock. Move the clock’s hands and have children count the hours.
  • Finger Puppets – As a craft activity, have the students make mice finger puppets. Use these to act out the nursery rhyme.
  • Character Development – Explore the character traits of the mouse who ran up the clock. Give the mouse a name, then use adjectives to describe its appearance and personality.
