How to Celebrate Chinese New Year – Lunar New Year in the Classroom

Lunar New Year, also known as Chinese New Year or Spring Festival, is a traditional holiday that is celebrated by many people in East Asia, Southeast Asia, and around the world.

In the classroom, celebrating Lunar New Year can be a fun and engaging way to teach pupils about different cultures. Here are a few ideas for how to celebrate in the classroom:

  • Start by teaching pupils about the history and customs of the Lunar New Year, such as the zodiac animals associated with each year, the traditional foods and decorations, and the significance of the holiday in different cultures.
  • Have pupils create traditional Lunar New Year decorations like paper lanterns or red envelopes filled with chocolate coins.
  • Cook or taste some traditional Lunar New Year dishes in a class.
  • Share stories, pictures, or videos of the celebrations in different countries or regions. You could try our Lunar New Year Slide Deck!

It is important to approach any cultural celebration in the classroom with sensitivity and to be sure to include diverse perspectives and stories.

How to Use Mindful Colouring Sheets in the Classroom

Colouring is a great way for children to practise mindfulness and re-focus their attention on something simple, but it can also be a fun way to relax and have fun. These intricate colouring sheets are perfect for helping your pupils refocus on academic tasks.
