An activity for students to determine which of 2 related facts is a main idea and which is a supporting detail.
Finding the main idea of a text is a challenging and critical skill for students.
This teaching resource is a sorting activity that gives students practice determining the difference between a main idea and a supporting detail. Students will first find the two related sentences, then determine which column to place them in.
There are 2 separate resources included in the download, both of which work on the same skill. Each resource has a separate color scheme so they can be put into a reading centre and used by different groups of students. The sentences with a yellow background match the yellow mat, and the sentences with a blue background match the blue mat.
Print on card, cut out the sentence strips, and place them in a sealable bag with the corresponding mat. Attach hook and loop dots to the mat and the back of the sentence strips to make this more hands-on.
An answer sheet for both sets is included.
