A set of 10 task cards to practice making predictions.

Use these prediction task cards to practise extracting relevant information from a text and pulling the correct prior knowledge to form a plausible prediction.

Making predictions in reading is more than just taking a wild guess! It is about using the clues the author gives us, along with our prior knowledge, to form a well-educated prediction. This is the part that our students usually stumble with!

Print out the resource on thick card and cut out the task cards along the dotted lines. A student recording sheet is also included in the download.

Why not use this resource as a literacy rotation activity?

Choose a task card to read aloud as a group. Discuss the content together, then have the students answer the following three questions:

  • What do you predict will happen next in the text?
  • What information from the text helped you make this prediction?
  • How did your prior knowledge help you make this prediction?
