An animal movements sorting activity.

Spark discussion among your students about the ways animals move with these beautiful images of animals.

The resource includes:

  • 16 picture cards, each with a photograph of an animal moving in a particular way
  • 4 categories cards: Swim, Fly, Slither and Walk/Run.

Students classify the animals according to how they are moving in the picture. (However, rich discussion could also revolve around the fact that some animals are capable of doing more than one of those movements, e.g. a cheetah can swim as well as walk/run.)

How Can I Further Explore Physical Science with this Resource?

As students classify the way each animal moves, ask them to consider how shape or size affects the way living things move. Encourage students to think about how the shape/size of an animal’s body parts might determine the speed or distance it can travel.
