An activity for students to use to consolidate their understanding of repeated addition as a way of representing multiplication.

Use this teaching resource when beginning to learn multiplication skills within the context of shopping in a toy store. The resource also gives students the opportunity to count coins/notes to make up values on price tags.

Students work with a partner, taking turns to be either the shopkeeper or the customer. Pictures of available toys are provided along with a shopping trolley in which to glue the purchased toys. The customer places their order on the order form and records their multiple purchases as repeated addition number sentences. The shopkeeper calculates the various costs and records this on the order form. Play money is used to pay for the goods.

This activity could be modified by adhering the toys, price tags and trolley to thick cardboard so that they could be re-used.
