What are Sight Words?

Sight words, also known as high-frequency words, are words that frequently appear in written texts. They often don’t follow regular phonetic patterns, making them difficult to decode using traditional phonics rules. Instead, they are typically memorised in the early years by students and revised on a consistent basis.

Because mastering sight words is crucial for young readers as it helps them read more fluently and with greater comprehension, our team of teachers here at Teach Starter have created this set of simple, yet highly effective, Roll to Read – Sight Word Game Pack fo ryou to use in your classroom.

How to Play Sight Word Games

One of the best ways for students to practice reading sight words is through game play. This provides repeated exposure to sight words, therefore reinforcing learning through repetition. This helps solidify students’ recognition and understanding of sight words while fostering a positive and engaging learning environment.

Our set of Roll to Read Sight Word Games is easy to implement in the classroom.

  1. Divide the students into groups of 2-4.
  2. Provide each student with a game board and each group with a die.
  3. Students take turns rolling the die and selecting a sight word from the corresponding line to read aloud. After reading a sight word, they cover it with a counter.
  4. Continue playing until all the words on the board have been read.
