A poster showing information regarding the status of Sumatran orangutans.
Print this Sumatran Orangutan Poster out and display it in your classroom when studying endangered animals.
Information includes:
Where: Aceh and North Sumatra
How many: Around 7,300 Sumatran orangutans still live in the wild. (As of 2004)
Why: The main threat to orangutans is habitat destruction. In the small area where orangutans live, forest fires are deliberately lit to make way for palm oil plantations. On average, a female orangutan will give birth to one offspring every 8-9 years. This means that orangutan populations grow slowly and take a long time to recover from habitat destruction and hunting.
