Let me tell you a story. It’s the story of a little old teaching resource idea that came to us after a conversation with the wonderful Lauren from Teacher Types. “Have you heard of hundreds board mystery pictures?” she asked… Well, we got ridiculously excited, collated some fantastic mystery picture ideas and jumped onto Instagram Stories to share the resource that we were sure would take only a few short days to create.
That was about a month ago. #allofthemonkeyscoveringtheireyesearsandmouths
In the following weeks we quickly (well, slowly) realised that recording, proofing, designing and proofing again the numbers and colors for each of these 32 Hundreds Board Mystery Picture Task Cards was a time-consuming process! But, such a worthwhile one because now we can finally present to you a downloadable resource that is, well, awesome!
Hundreds Board Mystery Pictures
Hundreds board mystery picture activities require students to color squares on a hundreds chart following a simple list of numbers. When they have finished coloring, the mystery picture is revealed!
A Set of 32 Activity Task Cards
Rather than creating a series of resources that contain a hundreds chart and instructions on each page, we thought it would be fantastic to create a set of hundreds chart mystery picture task cards that students can use with any blank hundreds board (though our download does contain the blank board too!).
We selected a variety of pictures that aren’t tied to a specific occasion or event, making this fast finisher activity suitable for your students the whole year through.
You can print and laminate the Hundreds Board Mystery Picture Task Cards to use again and again. This makes the cards a wonderful fast finisher activity that only requires photocopying of the hundreds boards.
How to Use Hundreds Board Mystery Picture Task Cards
Here are a few ideas about how you could use this resource in the classroom.
A Simple Differentiated Numeracy Activity
You’ll notice that the download contains a hundreds chart that is numbered from 1 to 100, as well as another hundreds chart that is blank. This provides you with a simple means for differentiating the activity for different students in your class.
Create a Hundreds Chart Mystery Picture Booklet
- Photocopy the resource into a booklet that contains 32 pages of hundreds charts.
- Provide each student in your class with their own booklet and ask them to number each chart from 1 to 32.
- Students can complete their booklet at suitable times by selecting a task card they haven’t yet completed.
They will easily be able to see which mystery pictures they have already ‘discovered’ by looking through their booklet before they select another task card.
Alternatively, you could also provide each student with a photocopy of the task card (pages 4 to 9 of the download) that they can keep folded inside the cover of their booklet, rather than needing to share laminated task cards around the class.
Keeping the task cards loose, rather than stapled into the booklet, will make it easier for students when they are completing the activity as they can set the task card beside the hundreds board they are working on, rather than having to flick back through the pages of their booklet.
Hundreds Chart Mystery Picture Solutions
AND the download also includes the solutions! On the final pages of the PDF file, you’ll be able to quickly see a thumbnail of the solutions for each mystery picture task card. It’s such a simple way to clarify any confusion about where a mouth, eyes or some other little feature goes.
Is this a free activity? If it is I cannot get it to load.
