Interview with Pru Earl
What lead you to a job at Teach Starter?
I always loved drawing and painting as a child. After high school, I started a Bachelor of Creative Industries but realized after a year, that the traditional university teaching style wasn’t for me. So, I switched to a Diploma of Graphic Design at CATC Design School and really enjoyed it. While studying I began part-time work as a receptionist at a Human Resources company and continued to work in reception and admin positions throughout my years of study.
The design industry can be a hard one to break into. So, I ended up using my admin experience to work my way into the companies and roles I wanted, by offering to be a ‘jack of all trades’. I worked as a junior designer while doing admin, and any other tasks the company needed from me at the time.
Everyone starts somewhere and after a couple of years, I had a good portfolio and some experience behind me. So, I started to apply for full-time designer roles. My best friend Fleur had been working at Teach Starter for a while when a new role as a designer became available. She told me to apply and a few days later I was in an interview with Scott (one of the founders of Teach Starter)!
Now, I am living my dream! Not only am I a full-time graphic designer, but I also work for a company that makes a positive change in the world. What’s more, I sit next to my best friend each day!
What do you love most about working at Teach Starter?
The people and the vibe. From the moment you walk into work on Monday morning to when you leave on Friday afternoon, everyone is buzzing and smiling. That kind of environment is so powerful.
What are some of your hobbies? What do you like to do in your spare time?
I really love good food and trying out new places with my friends and family. I also love live music and am into weight lifting and more recently yoga.
What are you passionate about?
I’m passionate about living a life that I’m excited to wake up to every morning. Being grateful for what you have and what you’ve already achieved while still pushing to be better or create something new each day.
