How to Use Coloring Pages in the Classroom
Coloring sheets have plenty of uses in the classroom, and you may already have a list. But we thought a few more ideas from our teacher team couldn't hurt!
- Use coloring pages during transitions to help students calm down and get ready for their next lesson after specials or lunch.
- Print out any of Teach Starter's giant coloring activities for students to work on together to build their collaboration skills.
- Print out packs of coloring sheets and add small boxes of crayons to hand out as fun gifts before winter break or summer vacation.
- Add a coloring element when making holiday cards with your class.
- Add mindful coloring pages to your classroom chill-out corner for students who need a little stress relief.
- Set up a coloring station for rainy days when students cannot go outside for recess.
- Use coloring as a brain break.
- Teach students about dressing for the weather with Teach Starter's fun summer and winter Santa coloring activity.
- Pull them out for your classroom party before winter break or on holidays like Valentine's Day.
- Print out sheets, and allow students to pick their favorites to make mini coloring books with their favorite holiday characters!
What Is Mindfulness Coloring?
Wait just a moment. We mentioned mindfulness coloring, but what is it? Also referred to simply as mindful coloring, this is quite simply a practice of combining the act of coloring with the principles of mindfulness meditation!
Mindfulness coloring involves focusing your attention on the present moment and being fully aware of the sensory experience of coloring.
It's a great way to work with students on engaging in an activity without judgment or attachment to the outcome, and it can help them with focus and concentration.
There's even educational research backing the benefits of coloring in for kids! Kids who are considered "at-risk," for example, have been found to benefit from coloring as a means for expressing themselves, while a study of people who colored mandalas experienced decreased heart rate and blood pressure and some improved symptoms of stress and anxiety.
