When Is Groundhog Day 2024?

The Groundhog Day holiday arrives just once a year (unless you're in a Bill Murray movie!), and that day is always February 2. The holiday is one of those that moves around the week, so in 2024 Groundhog Day will be a Friday. So long as school isn't called on account of snow, you can celebrate the announcement of an early (or late) spring with your students!

What Is Groundhog Day and How Does It Work?

Not familiar with this quirky holiday? The Groundhog Day celebration was born in 1887 in Gobblers Knob, Pennsylvania. The traditional tale is that if the groundhog emerges from its hole and sees its shadow, it gets scared and scurries back into its burrow, predicting six more weeks of winter. However, early spring is in the forecast if the groundhog doesn't see his shadow.

It's certainly a unique holiday, but it also opens the door for countless curriculum-aligned ways to celebrate.
