Looking for 4th Grade Multiplication Activities? Try These Spooktacular 2 and 3-Digit by 2-Digit Multiplication Worksheets

Halloween is coming up; what better way to celebrate is by bringing a bit of spook into every subject? We’ve put together a fun set of Halloween-themed multi-digit multiplication problems to help your 4th and 5th grade students practice using multiplication strategies.

Your students know how to multiply small numbers, draw an array, and use an area model for multiplication. Put all these skills to work with our Pumpkin Products cut-and-paste worksheets! 

Students read, rewrite and solve each problem on a marker board or scrap paper using any multiplication strategy to solve each problem presented. They will then cut and paste the matching product pumpkin to show the answer. Included are worksheets containing 2-digit by 2-digit and 3-digit by 2-digit numbers.

An answer sheet is included with your download for students to self-check their answers. 

Use a Variety of Multiplication Strategies

Support struggling students by showing them how to use manipulatives or draw pictures to help with problem-solving. Alternatively, provide students with anchor charts or direct instruction on the following multiplication strategies. 

• Repeated Addition: This is one of the most basic strategies for multiplication. You add a number to itself repeatedly to find the product. For example, to calculate 4 x 3, you can add 4 three times: 4 + 4 + 4 = 12.
• Skip Counting: Skip counting is a more efficient way to perform multiplication. It involves counting by the number you are multiplying. For example, to calculate 6 x 5, you can count by 5s: 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30.
• Arrays or Grids: This visual strategy involves creating an array or grid of rows and columns. You represent one number as the number of rows and the other as the number of columns. Then, you fill in each cell with the product of the corresponding row and column. This is especially useful for larger multiplication problems.
• Partial Products: With this method, you break down multiplication into smaller, more manageable parts. For example, to calculate 37 x 4, you can break it down into (30 x 4) + (7 x 4). Then, you calculate each part separately and add them together: (30 x 4) = 120 and (7 x 4) = 28, so 120 + 28 = 148.

These strategies can be adapted and combined to solve a wide range of multiplication problems efficiently. The choice of method often depends on the specific problem and the individual’s comfort and proficiency with each strategy.
