5th Grade Math Test – Operations with Fractions

Assessing student understanding of grade-level concepts is essential to the learning cycle. Once students have had an opportunity to practice and apply these skills, it is essential to have a tool to use to measure student progress. If you are looking for a tool to assess student understanding of operations with fractions, you have come to the right place!

Teach Starter has created this comprehensive math assessment to use with your 5th-grade students. With this assessment, students will demonstrate an understanding of different operations with fractions. This math test requires students to analyze and solve a variety of word problems, justify their reasonings, and solve computational-based problems with fractions.

This assessment covers the following computational topics:

  • Adding Fractions with Unlike Denominators
  • Subtracting Fractions with Unlike Denominators
  • Multiplying a Whole Number by a Fraction
  • Dividing a Unit Fraction by a Whole Number and a Whole Number by a Unit Fraction
  • Estimation

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

As an extension, have students create their own quiz about fraction operations, including a key with rationales. They can also create their own board game, making questions about fraction skills.

For added support, administer the test in a one-on-one or small group setting. Read the questions and choices aloud to the student. Allow the use of a multiplication chart, completed examples, calculator, anchor charts, or fraction pieces. Also, consider removing answer choices or questions to shorten the length. The assessment can also be “chunked” into sections to allow for more breaks during the test.
