5th Grade Math Test – Whole Number Operations

Assessing student understanding of grade-level concepts is essential to the learning cycle. Once students have had an opportunity to practice and apply these skills, it is essential to have a tool to use to measure student progress. If you are looking for a tool to assess student understanding of whole number operations, you have come to the right place!

Teach Starter has created this comprehensive math assessment to use with your 5th-grade students. With this assessment, students will demonstrate an understanding of different whole number operations. This math test requires students to analyze and solve a variety of word problems, justify their reasonings, and solve computational-based problems.

This assessment covers the following computational topics:

  • Adding Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
  • Subtracting Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
  • Multiplying Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
  • Dividing Multi-Digit Whole Numbers
  • Estimation

An answer key is included with your download to make grading fast and easy!

Tips for Differentiation + Scaffolding

For students who demonstrate mastery of these skills, provide enrichment opportunities. Challenge them to make a digital or poster tutorial, make a board game or digital game, provide the opportunity to peer tutor, or create a stop motion video that shows the steps of an algorithm.

The assessment can be modified to meet the needs of all learners. Accommodations may include reducing the number of questions, removing answer choices, providing vocabulary cards as a reference, providing completed examples as a reference, reading the questions orally, administering the assessment in a small group or one on one setting, chunking the test into smaller portions to allow for breaks, allowing the use of calculator or multiplication chart or adjusting the numbers in the problems to lower the complexity level.
