Assess Addition Strategies Easily

Are you looking for easy ways to assess students on different addition strategies during your unit? We’ve got exactly what you need to check understanding in a snap! These addition exit tickets focus on the following addition strategies:

  • Jump strategy, or counting on, involves starting with the larger number and mentally counting up the difference to quickly find the answer to an addition problem, usually on a number line.
  • Break apart strategy involves breaking one or both addends into smaller, more manageable parts to simplify the addition problem.
  • The hundreds chart strategy involves using a visual representation of numbers arranged in a grid of ten rows and ten columns to add tens and ones.
  • The compensation strategy involves adjusting one addend by adding or subtracting a small amount to make the calculation easier while maintaining the overall balance and finding the answer.

Exit tickets are a valuable tool that teachers can use to assess student understanding, gather feedback and inform instruction.
