Solve addition problems in this 2-page Counting On Addition Worksheet.

This worksheet is best used for independent practice as part of your addition strategies lesson.

Students will shade in circles or use a number line to visualize adding numbers, applying the “counting on” addition strategy.

Counting On Addition Worksheet Scaffolding and Extension Tips

In addition to individual student work time, use this counting on addition strategy worksheet as a(n) activity for your:

  • Math station/center
  • Post-lesson review exit ticket
  • Whole-class review activity (via smartboard)

Got fast finishers? Challenge students who grasp the concept by creating 1-2 addition problems of their own and solve them using either a number line or shading circle to show they can count on. They could also interpret the addition sentences by drawing pictures of base tens. For a further extension, challenge students to work on more problems that require regrouping. (There are a few on the second page of this worksheet.)

Support struggling students by using this worksheet as an intervention activity or with your guided math group. Use counters to help with the first page and base ten blocks/cubes to help with the second page.

A Variety of Ways to Prepare This Resource

Because this resource includes an answer sheet, we recommend you print one copy of the entire file. Then, make photocopies of the blank worksheet for students to complete.

To save paper, we suggest printing this 2-page worksheet double-sided.

You can also turn this teaching resource into a sustainable activity! Print a few copies on cardstock and slip them into dry-erase sleeves. Students can record their answers with a dry-erase marker, then erase and reuse.

Additionally, project the worksheet onto a screen and work through it as a class by having students record their answers in their math notebooks.
