Mastering Mass: What is Mass and Real World Applications

This set of 25 teaching slides has been created by an experienced teacher to help in the lesson planning of mass in the classroom. The topics that are covered in this slide deck include:

  • What is Mass?
  • Mass vs Weight
  • Units of Mass
  • How to measure mass
  • Using balance scales
  • Comparing masses
  • Estimating mass

This set of teaching slides really does cover a range of different aspects of mass, you may like to split this slide deck out over a few lessons and spend time exploring and even reviewing each of the above topics. This can ultimately be your math lesson planning for seven or more days!

Hands-On Mass Activities

To go with this set of teaching slides, here are some suggested hands-on mass activities:

  • Sorting objects based on mass activity – have a table of different objects and get students to feel the weight of each object, then they can sort them in order based on their perceived mass.
  • Label the mass unit activity – have labels with different units of mass (grams, kilograms, milligrams) and use pictures of different objects. In small groups time how quickly they can match the correct unit of mass with each object.
  • Measuring mass activity stations – set up stations around the classroom with different types of scales. Have students measure the mass of objects using each type of scales and record their results. As a class, discuss the accuracy of each of the scales.
