Build Reading Comprehension Skills With Paired Passages!

Using paired passages in reading class is a great way to improve your students’ critical thinking. These types of activities encourage them to compare, contrast, and combine information from different texts. This method will improve the close reading skills needed for academic research and upper-level writing tasks. It will also boost engagement through varied perspectives and content, holding their interest. Paired passages also help students develop contextual understanding and practice citing text evidence to support their statements and it is an all-too-important skill for standardized tests. This year, we encourage you to incorporate paired passages in your reading instruction to improve your students’ response to literature and close reading skills.

This collection of worksheets contains:

  • a literary text, The Midnight Thunderstorm
  • a factual text, All About Thunderstorms
  • a reading comprehension worksheet requiring students to answer questions about each text, and use information from both texts to compare and contrast the two passages.
