Author’s Purpose Sentences Stems Flashcards

This set of flashcards has been created to help students explicitly explain the purpose of a piece of writing from the author’s perspective. These easy-to-use cards are designed to give students the sentence starters they need when learning how to identify the author’s purpose in any text.

When students are learning how to identify the author’s purpose, having strong sentence starters can make a big difference. These authors purpose cards give students structured examples of how to begin their responses, helping them explain whether a text was written to persuade, inform, or entertain.

Each flashcard includes:

  • A sentence starter aligned with a specific author’s purpose
  • Clear author’s purpose example sentences for classroom modelling
Language prompts to guide reading responses and comprehension activities

Author’s Purpose Cards for Persuade, Inform & Entertain

These author’s purpose cards are grouped by purpose:

  • To Persuade: “The author is trying to convince the reader that…”
  • To Inform: “This text gives facts about…”
  • To Entertain: “The author wrote this to tell a fun story about…”

These author’s purpose example sentences help students organize their thoughts, use evidence from the text, and build their comprehension skills.
