Beginning and Ending Sound CVC Worksheets

This set of worksheets has been created by a teacher to assist students in their learning and understanding of the letters that match the beginning and ending sounds of different CVC words. This resource includes the following worksheets:

  • A set of worksheets where the beginning letters are missing on CVC words. Each vowel has a worksheet of it’s own for repetition for those students still practicing this skill.
  • A set of worksheets where the beginning and ending letters are missing on CVC words. Each vowel has a worksheet of it’s own for repetition for those students still practicing this skill.

How to Use these CVC Worksheets in the Classroom

As a brief idea, here is a suggested CVC lesson sequence for utilizing these worksheets in the classroom..

  1. Firstly, you will want to introduce and explain the concept of CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words to your class. Explain that there are basic words that consist of just one consonant, one vowel (in the middle) and finish off with another consonant. See if they can think of any words like this. You might also want to remind them about the letters that are vowels and those that are consonants too.
  2. Secondly, provide some examples of CVC words (these could be from the brainstorm in step 1, or words you write on the board). Model the process of sounding out each letter and blending them together to form the word.
  3. It’s time for some practice together. Get students to use their own show me whiteboards to practice writing some CVC words and segmenting and blending. You may like to use magnetic tiles for this also.
  4. Distribute the CVC worksheets where beginning letters or both beginning and ending letters are missing. Encourage students to work independently or in pairs to complete the words by filling in the missing letters.
  5. Offer support to students who may struggle by providing additional guidance or simpler examples. For further reinforcement, consider extension activities such as creating their own CVC words with missing letters or playing games like word bingo using CVC words.
