Fun with Beginning Sounds Game Boards

This set of beginning sounds game boards have been created and designed by an experienced elementary teacher to assist students in their letter-sound correspondence journey in the early grades. The download includes three different game boards that include images of each face of a dice and other basic beginning sound images.

Students are instructed to roll a die and choose an image from that column. Say the name of the item and the first sound (ball – /b/). If the item and sound are named correctly, they get to cover it! The game ends when all items have been covered.

Different ways to use these game boards from an experienced teacher include:

  • Write a letter on the board and get students to try and find an image on the game board that begins with that sound.
  • Project a game board onto the whiteboard and as a whole class you can play against the teacher – always lots of fun!
  • Choose a “Letter of the Day” and write it on the board. Students search the game board for images that begin with that letter and cover them.
  • Students roll the die, choose an image, and say the beginning sound. Challenge them to use the image in a short sentence aloud or write it down (e.g., “The ball is red”).
