Beginning Sounds Phonics Worksheets for Kindergarten Pack

Use this set of beginning sounds phonics worksheets to assist students in their phonics knowledge of single letter sound graphemes and their phonemes. Each phonics worksheet includes a spinner with 6 letters and a grid of 23 images.

Students are encouraged to spin the spinner and read the letter. They then need to color a picture with the same beginning sound. This encourages students to show their knowledge of letter recognition as well as sound recognition for single grapheme-phoneme correspondence.

Letter Sound Knowledge Game

This set of worksheets can be transformed into an engaging phonics game perfect for small group or partner activities! Here’s how:

  1. Pre-laminate each worksheet to create a reusable gameboard that withstands multiple uses. Lamination makes the activity durable and easy to clean.
  2. Use a paperclip and pencil as a spinner. Students spin the paperclip to land on one of the six letters.
  3. Students take turns spinning, identifying the letter, and finding an image that begins with the same sound as the letter spun. They place a counter over the matching picture on the board.
  4. The game continues until all pictures have been covered with counters. The student with the most counters on the board at the end of the game wins!

This game format adds a fun, competitive twist to phonics practice, reinforcing letter-sound correspondence in an interactive and collaborative way.
