Craft an illustrated timeline for students to explore politically significant moments of the last 3 centuries.

Look Back on History’s Most Influential Black Policy Makers & Political Events

Through this activity, students will learn about 23 milestone moments, elections, and appointments of African Americans to government positions. 

This timeline has a road theme with the names, dates, and details of influential Black American leaders displayed on road signs. Examples include:

🚦 Barack Obama – President (2009–2017)

🚦 Condoleeza Rice – Secretary of State (2005)

🚦 Colin Powell – Secretary of State (2001)

🚦 Carol Mosely Braun – Senator from Illinois (1993)

🚦 Shirley Chisolm – Congresswoman from New York (1968)

🚦 Oscar Dunn – Louisiana Lieutenant Governor (1868)

Display this resource in your classroom for students to reference during Black History and Women’s History Months, in addition to your civics and civil rights movement discussions.

Easily Prepare This Resource

Print as many extra copies of the road (page 2) as needed to assemble the timeline.

Print on tabloid paper:

  • Assemble the timeline as a classroom display board.
  • Project the road and use the signs as an interactive student activity to practice sequencing and chronological order.
  • Use the road signs for students to match the images to the correct event.

Print on letter paper (preferably on cardstock):

  • Place in your reading center for sequencing and chronological order practice.
