Phoneme Segmentation Activities for Beginning Readers

Our sorting activity uses a picture-based approach to help students practice producing words by blending and segmenting phonemes.  Students will look at each phoneme, identify the sounds or phonemes inside the word, and sort the words into categories based on the number of phonemes contained therein.

This sort is a fun and educational way to practice making phoneme blends. It will also lend nicely to further phonemic awareness lessons on

This phoneme segmentation activity will allow for multiple uses as an assessment tool, extra practice for reinforcement, or even an enrichment activity for those little ones who are finishing early!

Through this activity, students will enhance their ability to identify phonemes and corresponding sounds, further improving their reading fluency.
