Get your students ready for reading with these blending words reading warm-up task cards.
Blending Words Activities to Practice Blending
The more practice your students can get at blending phonemes together and reading the words – the easier it will get for them to read and the orthographic mapping to take place. This set of blending words reading warm up task cards are the perfect addition to your reading groups or just general class warm up activities.
Each card includes two words the students need to blend, and then three words to practice blending and fluency, and then one whole sentence. Depending on where your students are at on the reading journey – you could model how to do this as a whole class, or you could give these cards to the students to do themselves.
Why is Blending Practice Important?
Repetition of blending word practice is a crucial part of developing children’s reading skills. This skill helps build a strong foundation in phonemic awareness and decoding.
Here are some other reasons:
- They become better at decoding unfamiliar words when reading.
- Boost confidence in reading.
- Helps develop their orthographic mapping.
- Improves comprehension.
- Promotes independent reading and a lifelong love of reading.
