Slide into Success: Blend CVC Words with this Fun Phoneme Blending Game

This Slides and Ladders game has been designed by an experienced teacher to provide a hands-on activity for students to play in the classroom.

Students will pick a game piece – or they can just use counters from the classroom. Then, they will spin the spinner and move their game piece the amount of spaces. If they land on a space below a ladder they can move their piece up to the top of the ladder. If they land on the top of a slide they will move their piece down the slide. They need to blend and say the name of each picture they land on. They can use the word cards to help guide them when they land on a space.

How to Teach Blending CVC Words

Teaching budding readers to blend CVC words is an important skill for them to develop. This includes helping students to smoothly combine individual sounds to form words – which assists with them also comprehending what they are reading.

Here’s a suggested sequence of teaching events to help students with this skill.

  1. Introduce the phonemes – students must be familiar with the phonemes of each letter of the alphabet.
  2. Model blending – demonstrate blending CVC words – you could even use this quiz in a whole class environment and have some students also model the blending of these phonemes.
  3. Segment and blend – first break down the words into the individual sounds and then segment to bring the sounds back together to say the whole word.
  4. Practice, practice, practice – use manipulatives, letter tiles, flashcards and printable resources to allow students the opportunity to practice blending phonemes and letters to read words.
