Host a Classroom Book Tasting to inspire young readers with a printable book tasting placemat and brochure template.
What Is a Book Tasting?
A book tasting is an activity intended to expose students to books, genres and authors that they might not otherwise explore themselves. It is designed to be a fun event in which students read a sample, record key details, then choose a title to read in full. More than anything, book tastings are designed to get children excited about reading new books!
Plan a Book Tasting During Read Across America Week!!
Read Across America Week is the perfect time to run a book-tasting session in your classroom! This resource includes everything you need to know to set-up your very own book tasting. Just follow these simple instructions
- Decide on the goal for the tasting, as this will help you when selecting books to share and will provide students with a focus while participating in the activity. Examples include exploring Caldecott Award nominees, exposing students to different genres, or choosing a book for silent/independent reading.
- Select titles from the library. You will need at least one title for each student you have in the class.
- Depending on the your choice, students can either rotate between different tables, remaining at each table for a designated time OR students remain at one table and choose a single book to explore. Before beginning, model how to sample a book for your students to help them understand what to do – look at and read the front and back cover, contents page, illustrations, and then read a few pages.
- Students will sample a book and then, record key details and their opinions on the templates provided.
- Students choose a title they want to read. Those that complete the pamphlet choose from the four books they sampled. Those that do not complete the placemat can choose from titles remaining.
The resource download includes two differentiated book tasting brochure templates and a book-tasting placemat. The brochures have been differentiated for both higher and lower grades.
