Animal Facts Files for Report Writing

One of the key features of any information report is a set of like facts grouped together under relevant subheadings.

This set of 5 cut-and-paste worksheets has been designed by our experienced teacher team to help your students learn this important skill. For each worksheet/animal, students are required to cut out the facts and place them under the correct subheading. The subheadings include:

• What is it?
• What does it look like?
• Where does it live?
• What does it eat?

The animals included are:

• Frogs
• Penguins
• Crocodiles
• Baleen Whales
• Butterflies

All examples are written in simple, age-appropriate language, making them suitable for 1st- and 2nd-graders.

Take These Animal Fact Files Further with Your Students

This resource has been designed by our expert teacher time as a precursor to report writing. Before students can write a report independently, they must understand how to place like facts together under relevant subheadings.

Looking for some ideas about how you might use these animal fact files with your students? One suggestion from our teacher team is to use at least three texts in the resource: one for a modeled, whole-class activity, one for a small-group or pair activity and one for independent practice. This means that the amount of support is gradually withdrawn as the students become more confident with the process of grouping the facts.

As an extension activity, you could even challenge more confident students by asking them to write a simple animal information report from the fact file by turning the facts into full sentences.
