Build New Words with Our Suffix Pocket Chart Cards

Use this resource in your reading center, as a guided reading activity, or a whole class exercise (see below) to practice building words with root words and prefixes.

Students will match a base word to a suffix card to create a new word. We recommend using these cards as a whole group or small group pocket chart lesson.

Scaffolding + Extension Tips

Challenge students who already understand the concept to use the new words in a sentence or explain the meaning of the base word, suffix, and new word.

Support students who need help understanding the concepts by assigning peer pairs to build new words with prefixes and root words.

More Suffix Exercises

Use this resource as independent practice for fast finishers, and for full-class learning opportunities like scoot activities, lesson reviews, comprehension assessments, and more.

✍️ Write the Room (Scoot Activity)

Hang sheets of chart paper around the room and post a suffix card above each one. Individually, or with a partner, have students rotate around the room adding a base word that can be used with the suffix.
