What is a Calm Down Corner?
What is a calming corner, you may ask? The concept is fairly straightforward. A calm-down corner is a designated space where students (or teachers!) can go to de-stress and handle their emotions when they are feeling overwhelmed, upset, or stressed out. This area is typically furnished with tools and exercises designed to help them settle down and regain control over their feelings.
How to Create a Calming Corner in Your Classroom
A calming corner consists of several easy-to-acquire tools and resources your students will find beneficial when dealing with strong emotions. Some typical features found in calming corners are:
- Comfortable Seating: A cozy chair, bean bag, or floor cushions.
- Soft Lighting: Lamps or fairy lights to create a soothing atmosphere.
- Sensory Tools: Items like stress balls, fidget toys, or sensory materials.
- Books: Stories or picture books about emotions and coping strategies.
- Art Supplies: Crayons, coloring books, or drawing paper
On top of those, a calming corner also provides materials for students to use to help them learn strategies and ways to manage their emotions. These include
- Calm Down Cards
- Motivational Posters
- Visual aids with techniques for calming down, such as deep breathing exercises, yoga poses, etc.
- Mindful coloring activities
