Promote cultural awareness and learn about Cinco de Mayo with an instructional slide presentation.
What is Cinco De Mayo? Instructional Slide Deck
Before integrating Cinco de Mayo activities into the classroom, you must first teach the students the details and cultural traditions behind the celebration. While creating this Cinco De Mayo activity for elementary students, we discovered many facts about the Cinco de Mayo holiday.
- Cinco de Mayo, or the fifth of May, is a holiday that celebrates the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862, victory over France at the Battle of Puebla.
- While it is a relatively minor holiday in Mexico, Cinco de Mayo has become a commemoration of Mexican culture and heritage in the United States.
- Cinco de Mayo is not Mexican Independence Day.
- The battle lasted from sunrise to early evening, and when the French finally retreated, they lost nearly 500 soldiers. Fewer than 100 Mexicans had been killed in the clash, which surprised the people greatly.
