Comparing Decimals and Ordering Decimals Anchor Charts
Are your students in need of additional strategies to learn how to compare and order decimals properly? As we all know, one method does not fit all, so teaching different ways to solve problems like this is important.
Teach Starter has created a set of reference sheets you can use with your students in your place value unit when learning how to compare and order decimals. After teaching these methods to your students, consider allowing them to share which strategy is their favorite!
With this set of math posters, you can teach your students three different ways to tackle decimal comparison problems. These strategies include:
- Line Up Your Decimals – Line up the decimals being compared. Compare, starting in the greatest place and moving backward until one digit is greater.
- Draw It Out – Draw the decimals being compared using Base 10 blocks. Cross out blocks on each number until there is a greater value in a specific place.
- Use a Number Line – Create a number line, then plot the decimals being compared.
Multiple Versions of These Comparing and Ordering Decimals Anchor Charts
This resource contains four anchor charts. The first anchor chart contains all three strategies for comparing and ordering decimals (Line Them Up, Draw Them Out, Use a Number Line). The remaining three pages contain separate, whole-page posters for each strategy.
Here are some suggestions as to how you might use these anchor charts with your students:
- Use the summary anchor chart as a teaching tool during lesson warm-ups or wrap-ups when explaining ways to compare and order decimals.
- Provide students with a copy of the summary page to paste into their notebooks as a reference on ways to compare and order decimals.
- Print out the anchor charts to display on your math bulletin board. (Note: You may wish to enlarge these to aid readability.)
