Cutting Up Contractions and Putting Them Together

This set of worksheets has been created by a teacher to help students practice their knowledge of contractions. In this set of worksheets, students are required to do the following:

  • Cut up words and match them with their contraction.
  • Cut up contractions and match them with their two words.
  • Cut up contractions and match them with their words within a set of sentences.

Each of these worksheets has a matching answer sheet for students to check their work themselves.

Why Teach Contractions to Children?

Contractions are shortened forms of words where two words are combined, and some letters are replaced by an apostrophe. For example, “do not” becomes “don’t” and “I am” becomes “I’m.” They are commonly used in everyday speech and writing to make communication quicker and more natural.

The idea of contractions needs to be explicitly taught to students as they are commonly used in everyday speech and informal writing. Explicitly teaching your students about contractions will help them to sound more like native speakers and improve their listening comprehension. Understanding contractions also enhances their reading fluency and writing skills.
