Contraction Activities to Match
Simply get a set of flashcards with the contractions you want your students to practice. Then, pick one of these fun activities:
Flashcard Relay Race – Quickly match contractions with their expanded forms in a relay format.
- How to Play:
- Divide students into two or more teams.
- Place a set of contraction cards at one end of the room and a set of expanded form cards at the other end.
- Teams line up and, on the signal, the first student in each team runs to the contraction cards, picks one, runs to the expanded form cards, and finds the matching card.
- The student then runs back to tag the next teammate. The first team to correctly match all their cards wins.
Memory Match – Enhance memory and recognition of contractions and their expanded forms.
- How to Play:
- Shuffle the cards and lay them face down in a grid.
- Students take turns flipping two cards, trying to find a matching pair of a contraction and its expanded form.
- If a match is found, the student keeps the pair and takes another turn. If not, the cards are turned back over.
- The student with the most pairs at the end wins.
